Run Your Own Race

Some people will always be ahead of you.

And that’s okay.

I recently came across a simple analogy that stayed with me, and I keep coming back to it.

Life as a 100-meter race

Imagine life as a 100-meter race.

Some people start at 0m.
Some are already at 20m.
And some have to start at -20m.

Not everyone begins with the same opportunities, network, resources, education, financial support, or luck.

You might work incredibly hard and finally catch up with the person who started 20 meters ahead of you…

Only to look up and find someone else 50 meters ahead.

And once you reach them, there will probably be someone even further ahead.

That’s a fact. That’s information.

You don’t have to deny it. You don’t have to pretend everyone started from the same place.

Acknowledge it, then keep running

This is the line that stuck with me most:

You can acknowledge that there will always be people who start the race ahead of you, without surrendering your ability to run your own race.

Knowing that someone started ahead of you doesn’t mean you stop running.

The problem starts when we spend too much time looking sideways:

  • “Why are they already there?”
  • “Why am I still here?”
  • “How did they achieve this so early?”

If you keep looking at the people ahead of you, you might forget to look at how far you’ve already come.

It was never a sprint

Maybe the goal isn’t to catch everyone.

Maybe the goal is to keep moving forward from wherever you started.

Because life isn’t really a 100-meter race. It’s a marathon.

Different starting points.
Different circumstances.
Different timelines.

Acknowledge the advantage others may have.
Accept it as information.
And then keep running your race.
